  • - publications, lectures in US, UK, NL and Germany
  • - 1980 – 1990: mathematician at the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg
  • - 1990 - 2001: department head in the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg; from 1991 on director and professor of the BSH
  • - 1997 – 2002: chairman of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Northeast Atlantic and the North Sea
  • - 2001 – 2008: state secretary of the Hamburg Ministry for Science and Research
  • - 2004: also state secretary of the Hamburg Ministry for Culture
