The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has found that in Germany, it often takes several generations to rise to the middle of society.
This shows that social permeability in Germany is lower than in other countries. An academically sound education opens up particularly good individual opportunities for financial and social advancement, even if typical male and female professions continue to offer different working conditions, possible salaries and opportunities for advancement.
However, universities not only contribute to individual advancement. Academic training is the basis for ensuring that there are enough specialists available in the fields of early childhood education,
teaching and social work, for example. Universities also research the causes of social inequality and develop transfer proposals. This can extend to the level of policy advice, moderation or mediation in socially relevant issues.
The analytical and problem-solving skills of universities are important in times of demographic change and disruptive social developments, as well as with regard to demographic change and digitalization.
However, current developments also pose enormous challenges for universities if they want to play their role in organizing social advancement.
For this reason, the symposium will not only discuss the role of universities in organizing social advancement in general as part of an opening panel, but will also hold supplementary workshops to discuss what science in Hamburg can achieve and what framework conditions it needs to do so.
The program is open to all interested parties and is free of charge. Registration is requested: Gesellschaftlicher-Aufstieg@HAW-Hamburg.de
