The seminar deals with the broad concept of remixing in our current digital age. Concepts of sampling, recontextualizing, reframing and bundling existing information are fundamental factors of today's - not only artistic - world. The aim is to take a holistic look at the cultural concepts of re-editing and re-interpreting in general, and in music and visual art specifically. The core approach of reworking an existing artwork serves as a starting point beyond the classical remix definition and will allow us to think abut different techniques to re-access and re-evaluate music, data and facts. The included topics range from big data, artificial intelligence, appropriation, to questions of authorship, political framing and works with archives. The remix principle will be considered both conceptually and technically, and various methods will be discussed and implemented in practice. We will look at a large number of very diverse examples from different art contexts.
Each student will be asked to create one short music/artwork (in practice or in theory). For this two practical group sessions are reserved over the course of the seminar.
