To wrap things up, we’re sending a musical greeting from the Forum at the solidarity event <i>“In Focus Iran: Music and Art as a Voice of Protest”</i> on November 27.

With “For Dancing in the Streets” as the first line and “For Freedom” as the last, the song “Baraye” (translated into English as “for” or “because of”) a collection of tweets posted on social media at the start of the protest movement in Iran, in which people describe their personal reasons for the protests and their desire for regime change in Iran.

Iranian singer and composer Shervin Hajipour set these phrases to music in a song that quickly became the voice and anthem of the revolution. Shortly after its release, he was briefly detained and the post was forcibly deleted, but the song has long since found its way: it is played in Iran on rooftops, in cars, and in cafés; schoolchildren write the lyrics on blackboards; college students sing the song on campus; and exiled Iranians sing it at every demonstration…

Ali Abbasi Fard—a 7th-semester acting student at the HfMT—performed the song for us. He was accompanied by Lucie Spedicato on the harp.
