GO GO GO
Dear friends of the HfMT,
Here we are again. The house is full and art wants to take to the stage. Cheeky and boisterous, we're peppering the Forum with five symphony concerts, celebrating the Theaterakademie for its tender 20 years, sending the ligeti zentrum and its research-based expertise into the autumn Code Week, looking forward to our new collaboration in the university's Audimax and treating ourselves to some good reading in between with the latest issue of zwoelf.
Staying at home is not an option.
We look forward to seeing you here!

KICK-OFF WITH THE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The HfMT Symphony Orchestra will provide the festive setting for the anniversary of the Theaterakademie at the opening of our season. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, director and professor Sabina Dhein provides an insight into the work and visions of this important institution, which includes the acting, directing theater and directing musical theater, opera singing and dramaturgy and teaching theater courses.
Musically, in addition to the symphonic orchestral sound, we can look forward to a number of students performing as soloists. The program includes works by the recently deceased Russian-Tatar composer Sofia Gubaidulina, our composition professor Gordon Kampe and the violin concerto by Benjamin Britten.
FURTHER SYMPHONY CONCERTS
Symphony concerts 2 and 3 result from the opening program of the previous evening, supplemented by the 7th Symphony by Beethoven, with which Prof. Ulrich Windfuhr completes the orchestra's Beethoven cycle.
Symphony Orchestra of the HfMT on 7 and 8 October
A few days later, we will be hosting the Lübeck University of Music Symphony Orchestra, which will be performing works by Peter Eötvös, Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Dmitri Shostakovich exclusively from the 20th century. The Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös was inspired by an aurora borealis for the work Aurora for double bass and string orchestra with accordion and designed his composition to be as powerful and colorful as the light structures of the aurora borealis.
Symphonieorchester der Musikhochschule Lübeck on 10 October
Finally, Brahms, Brahms, Brahms will be performed on October 30 in the workshop concert with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of our conducting students and with concert exam student Ting-Shuo Chang on the solo violin.
Windfuhr's workshop concert #1 on October 30
AUDIMAXVOCAL
With the new concert series AudiMaxVocal, we are now also cultivating our good relations with the University of Hamburg on a shared stage by regularly sending young voices into the large lecture hall. Thematically, we explore the new terrain with singers and instrumentalists at the end of their studies or the beginning of their artistic careers as a place for music in all world languages, rarely performed, unknown, forgotten or ostracized song and chamber music repertoire as well as works by female composers of all times and countries.
The opening concert will feature alumnae Nora Kazemieh (mezzo-soprano) and Simon Yang (tenor) together with Tanja Becker-Bender (violin), Mariana Popova and Burkhard Kehring (piano).

WE DIE, SO WE LIVE
The musical theater production Nos Vivimos Muriendo, with which Iván Ruge completes his directing degree, is characterized by a cheerful lightness and the warmth of a trusting togetherness, but is also about death.
"My grandmother died three years ago, while I was having my first lessons here at the university. I was already afraid of that as a child. Other relatives and friends have also died. Then there is death in the world, the society that kills and the society that ignores." Dealing with death artistically became an inner and urgent need for Iván.
However, while death is often met with silent sorrow in the European tradition, it is celebrated in Iván's native Colombia and in Latin American and Caribbean culture in general. Iván has brought together a large team for his degree. "We research together, get lost in the jungle of improvisations and thoughts and enjoy the process. And we show what each body, each voice and the connection of this group have created with great sensitivity from the precious material of the author Peppa and the composer Sebastián, to share with the audience our rhythm, our language, our feelings and experiences."
And specifically? "The music by Sebastián Astacio and the lyrics by Peppa Camila Briones were the result of many hours of conversations, messages and video calls. Our personal stories, our musical and literary preferences, which often coincided, were particularly important. The music that the audience will hear and experience is a Latin American bomb full of rhythm and joie de vivre: salsa, merengue, reggaeton, bolero... "
BEST OF FINAL YEAR DRAMA 2025/26
It is with a heavy heart that we let you go!
You were wonderful and we will miss you!
In good tradition, you will perform one last time on the familiar stage at Wiesendamm, presenting us with a probably intoxicating best-of mixture of the art you have learned and introducing you to the directors and dramaturges from the German-speaking theater world, in order to be hired directly in the best case.
We will be there to listen to your monologues, scenes and songs and wish you a golden future. All the best!
TWELVE WITH A FOCUS ON THEATER
The new issue of zwoelf has been published and this time features a 12-page special on the work of the Theaterakademie. Introduced with the words 'A rehearsal "space for utopias, visions of the future" and activism', you will find some worthwhile reflections on the "...and theater" of our HfMT.
It examines and reflects on 'theatrical resistance', 'the method of dramatization', 'the thunder in the soundless', 'music theater in the field of tension of the present', transatlantic phantasms and much more, which has been compiled here into a philosophical booklet.
You can find the zwoelf as an e-paper on our website or to take away at the HfMT.
If you would like to receive the zwoelf regularly free of charge by post, please send us an e-mail with your address to redaktion.zwoelf@hfmt-hamburg.de
