ART SONG COMPOSITION IN ISRAEL
Aufgrund der aktuellen politischen Lage muss diese Veranstaltung leider abgesagt werden.
Israeli art-songs mirror various Israeli contradictions: between national and individual values; between "Western" classical tradition and "Eastern" soundscapes; and between (concert) "art-song" and the (popular) "Hebrew song". This introduction discusses some aspects of the style of these songs and demonstrates some aspects of their performance-practice. Pianists, singers and art-song lovers are welcome to get the taste of this rich and rewarding repertoire.
The pianist Dr. Ido Ariel is a leading figure in the field of Art-Song in Israel and a senior lecturer in the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.
Songs that will be discussed:
1. Paul Ben-Haim (Rachel Blobstein): Barren ("Akara" for soprano/mezzo-soprano, 1938-9) – Western Lied tradition, "Mediterranean style", individual/national values
2. Zvi Avni (Matti Katz): A star has fallen ("Kochav nafal" for soprano/tenor, 1969-70) – Eastern soundscape, non-tonal language.
3. Mordechai Ze'ira (Natan Altermann)/Menachem Wiesenberg (arrangement): Night by night ("Layla, Layla" for mezzo-soprano, alto, baritone, 1946/1988) – Folksiness, "classical" vocal tradition and arrangement
