“’Awfully Ugly’: Pauline Viardot as Art and Artist”
About the lecture:
The singer-composer Pauline Viardot (1821-1910) was herself not only an extraordinary musician, but also the colleague and friend of countless others, including Rossini, Chopin, Liszt, Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Fauré, and Tchaikovsky, as well as writers like George Sand, Turgenev, Flaubert and Zola, and artists like Delacroix. Building on depictions of Viardot in paintings and photography, this talk explores how Viardot shaped her artistic life as a woman in a century of turmoil.
