String instruments

String training has traditionally played an important role at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama since its foundation. In recent decades, as well as in recent years, the success of this training has manifested itself in graduates who play in internationally renowned orchestras, hold concertmaster and section leader positions, work as professors at German universities and lead an active concert life as soloists and chamber musicians. The string department at the HfMT has repeatedly won prizes in major competitions.

A great deal of emphasis is placed on regular practical experience in the context of concerts during training. Studio concerts, string master classes and workshops are enthusiastically received by regular audiences and new visitors and offer students recurring performance opportunities. All students play for the professors of their instrument every year as part of intermediate examinations and can also grow through repeated feedback and gain experience in examination and audition situations. Within the framework of string master classes, students have the opportunity to work publicly with professors from other classes and in this way gain new inspiration, also across instruments. Guest courses with renowned personalities take place regularly. An important focus of the work is also on chamber music, and at the same time, networking with other subject groups such as early music and composition offers further opportunities for students to gain a comprehensive education.

Every September before the start of the academic year, the International Mendelssohn Summer School also takes place, where artists from the Hamburg University of Music and Drama, particularly from the string and chamber music departments, come together with international guest artists, give concerts and teach students from the University as well as students from all over the world.
