Stay healthy while playing!

Making music, whether playing an instrument or singing, is an art of movement. Smooth interaction between all parts of the body and mental well-being are crucial for artistic activity!

In cooperation with the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) , the Department of Music and Health at the Institute of Music Therapy develops and supervises all issues relating to health and music-making, especially for students and teachers at the HfMT.

It aims to promote awareness of health maintenance (health competence) when making music, teaching and performing and is active in prevention, counseling, therapy mediation and research.

The Center for Music and Health provides information on preventative measures, is dedicated to the treatment of complaints caused by music-making and combines interdisciplinary medical, alternative medical, psychological and body-oriented health concepts.

Courses offered

The Center for Music and Health offers a two-semester course on health topics. This includes physical topics (e.g. overuse of arms or neck) as well as psychosocial topics (e.g. stage fright, stress management).

A theoretical introduction to the topics is followed in the second half of each seminar unit by a practical part with exercises under physiotherapeutic guidance.

You can find some short and simple home exercises from our physiotherapy course with Julia Keyser here:

The course always takes place on Wednesdays every 2 weeks at 3 pm in the music therapy seminar room. The next course starts on Wednesday, 11.10.2023.

Further information can also be found in the course catalog.

The aim of this preventative program is to provide the body with sufficient support to withstand the daily stresses and strains. Spending several hours a day in one position on the instrument requires sufficient stability, mobility and strength. In "PowerJam" we work on making our bodies more flexible and at the same time more stable and stronger so that they can cope with the regular stresses of practicing and making music.

The program takes place weekly on Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. and Thursdays at 12:45 p.m. in the music therapy seminar room. Sportswear is requested.

The "Moving Break" is an offer for the administration and teaching staff of the university. The muscles of the upper and lower back as well as the shoulder and neck area are specifically loosened and slightly strengthened as part of a 15-minute exercise program during the lunch break. Problems and requests are assessed weekly and incorporated into the next lesson.

In the long term, a small self-exercise program is gradually developed that can be carried out independently in the office.

The program takes place weekly on Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m.  and Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. in the music therapy seminar room.

Participants do not need any sportswear or aids.
