The study program

The aim of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Protestant and Catholic Church Music is to impart artistic-practical, theoretical and methodological learning content that enables graduates to meet the requirements of their future profession. Graduates should have become intensively acquainted with the content of church music and their future tasks as church musicians. They should also have very sound skills on the instruments and in singing. In addition, they should be able to conduct choirs and orchestras. Experience with popular music, especially gospel, is also part of the requirement profile. As a future employer, the church plays a major role in society not only as a cultural institution, but even more so in social interaction. Accordingly, social, communicative and organizational skills are essential requirements for the profession and thus for the course. The social responsibility postulated in the university's mission statement is put into practice here in particular. In addition to the content aimed at acquiring instrumental, vocal and communicative skills, great importance is attached to the theoretical and scientific aspects of music. Graduates of the Bachelor's degree program have therefore become intensively acquainted with a broad spectrum from the Middle Ages to the present day and are able to critically reflect on and communicate issues. Graduates should have developed a critical understanding and be able to develop, justify and implement independent ideas and artistic concepts. In addition to the ability to abstract academically, organizational skills, social skills and the ability to communicate are of great importance for church musicians. The training takes place with a view to employment in the regional churches and dioceses throughout Germany. The profession requires a wide range of skills, from practical pedagogical groundwork, professional marketing and work organization to high artistic quality in concert. The aim of the training is to be as practice-oriented as possible and to develop the ability to deal independently and responsibly with the changing demands of the profession and to find solutions.
