Doctorate Dr. sc. mus.

The HfMT Hamburg's doctoral program Dr. sc. mus. (Doctor of Musicology) offers the opportunity to pursue either a scientific or an artistic-scientific doctorate. In contrast to the purely scientific dissertation, the artistic-scientific doctorate consists of an artistic project and a written dissertation.

Interested candidates should have completed a master's degree in music or musicology. The Dr. sc. mus. doctoral program is aimed at artists, musicologists, music theorists and music technologists who base their work in research or scientific disciplines as well as artistic disciplines. We are looking for artistic personalities who are able to work in accordance with academic standards and who are willing to critically and reflectively examine their own work.

The doctoral program is divided into four modules. Two of these modules should cover academic subjects that are related to the content of the doctoral project. The third and fourth modules are the dissertation and defense. The doctoral committee, representing different departments of the HfMT, meets once or twice per semester. An exchange between the doctoral students and the various specialist groups is intended to promote interdisciplinary work during the doctoral degree program. Regular colloquia promote the exchange between doctoral students and enable them to regularly present and discuss the progress of their own project in plenary sessions.

There is also the option of exchanging ideas with Dr. phil. doctoral students and benefiting from the diversity of the topics dealt with here.

The application deadline for the summer semester is December 15, for the winter semester May 15.

Please submit your application (summarized in a pdf file) by e-mail within the application deadline to the:chair of the doctoral committee and to promotion@hfmt.hamburg.de with the following documents:

- Expose with working title and work plan for the doctorate

- Degree certificate and proof of the admission requirements

-Curriculum vitae in tabular form

-Confirmation of supervision from the supervising assessors as first or second assessor.

The admission requirements can be found in §4 of the doctoral degree regulations and in Annex 1 of the study regulations.

Please note that with your application for admission as a doctoral candidate, you must also submit written consent from the first supervisor (and, if applicable, also from the second supervisor) stating that they are willing to supervise the dissertation. One of the first steps is therefore to talk to a potential reviewer who is willing and able to supervise the doctorate.
