Doctorate, research & Transfer

Research has always played a major role in the history of the HfMT HH. In recent years, research activities have become increasingly diversified and expanded, leading to the development of a distinct research profile. A clear manifestation of this development is the opening in May 2023 of the ligeti zentrum, funded by the federal-state initiative “Innovative University.” As an interdisciplinary transfer center, it brings together Hamburg’s universities and research fields with diverse focuses, thereby advancing key objectives of the transfer strategy .

In addition to research in the fields of musicology, music theory, music education, music therapy, and culture and media management, there are recent developments and activities in music technology and the field of artistic research. In addition to the two doctoral programs leading to the Doctor philosophia (Dr. phil.) and the Doctor scientiae musicae (Dr. sc. mus.), there are a multitude of larger and smaller research projects are based at the HfMT HH. With the option of an artistic-scientific doctoral degree, the HfMT HH is a pioneer in the German-speaking world.
