The prerequisite for studying at the HfMT HH is successful participation in the artistic and academic entrance examination for the desired course of study.

The entrance examination is taken for the chosen main subject. In the musical subjects, it is also taken for the subsidiary subjects of music theory, aural training and piano. Below you will find further details on the entrance examination.

Video upload

For some degree programs, you submit a video as an upload during the application deadline and for some degree programs you will receive your invitation to the entrance exam by email or in the online application portal for download.

You will find the link to the video upload on the entrance exam page of the respective degree program.

At the beginning of the video, please introduce yourself verbally and personally in German:
Name, age, desired course of study, teacher preference if applicable and program played.

All recordings can also be made without piano accompaniment and with a cell phone. However, they must be unedited. Excerpts are played, e.g. the first movement of a concerto from the beginning to the recapitulation and a cadenza, if one is available. The movements are played from the beginning. If a time is specified, the performance will be sensibly interrupted once the desired duration has been reached.

Prerequisites for the consideration of your video are

  • Online application completed in full (incl. upload of full supporting documents)
  • Entrance examination fee paid in full and on time
  • Compliance with the deadline for video upload
  • Video uploaded under the correct link (link to upload in the invitation, see online application portal)
  • Video uploaded in the correct format (=mp4)
  • Video can be opened without errors
  • Video named correctly (surname.firstname.applicationnumber.program.mp4)

Questions about uploading can be directed to ecampus@hfmt.hamburg.de.

Passed entrance examination

A successful entrance examination is valid for a limited period of four semesters.

Students are entitled to study if they

  • the artistic-academic aptitude in an entrance examination
  • the higher education entrance qualification (general higher education entrance qualification or a previous qualification recognized as equivalent by the competent authority, such as the Abitur)

provides proof.

If the higher education entrance qualification was not obtained in Germany or in a German-speaking country, proof of German language skills is an additional requirement. This does not apply to applications for degree programs where English is the language of instruction.

Outstanding artistic aptitude

In the case of outstanding artistic aptitude, proof of a higher education entrance qualification (HZB) may be waived. Outstanding artistic aptitude is determined by the entrance examination committee as part of the major subject examination. This is the case if the major subject examination was assessed with a grade of at least "1.5" or 23 points. If the major subject examination is not assessed with differentiated grades or points, the entrance examination committee for the major subject decides on the existence of outstanding artistic ability.

In the case of outstanding artistic aptitude, proof of a secondary school leaving certificate or previous education recognized as equivalent by the competent authority must be provided in all cases.

This does not apply to the teaching subjects of music or theater as part of a teacher training course, where the HZB is required in addition to the entrance examination. In the case of admission, this must be proven at the latest when enrolling at the HfMT HH and at the UHH.

Additional admission requirements and entrance examination requirements are regulated in the study regulations for the individual degree programs.
