The two-year Master’s program in Directing, with specializations in music theater or drama, allows students to deepen their artistic research through individual profile analysis and learning agreements. Two projects are planned during the course of the program: a workshop production of an experimental nature and a larger final project.

There are various options for the final production after the second year:

• In the Music Theater specialization , students can either develop a world premiere in collaboration with the Composition and Dramaturgy programs or reinterpret a work from the repertoire.
• The spectrum in the Acting track ranges from devised theater and the development of an original theatrical performance to a new interpretation of a literary work.

Professional development in engaging with the professional theater field:

• regular roundtable discussions with representatives from various roles at theaters
• In addition to the Kulturfabrik Kampnagel venue and the HfMT Forum, we seek collaborations with various theaters that are willing to produce master’s degree productions and include them in their repertory.

The Theater Academy works closely with the various degree programs at its own university and is constantly expanding its collaborations with other universities in and outside Hamburg. This applies to set design, costume design, composition, musicians and orchestras, actors and singers, and others.

Exchanges with European theater training programs are an integral part of the curriculum.
