Art is beautiful - and it costs money!
Instruments have to be maintained, sheet music bought, instrument insurance taken out, strings replaced, bows re-covered, quills fitted, reeds made, application videos professionally produced, travel costs to competitions and participation fees for masterclasses paid.
The list of costs associated with an artistic education is long.

The Supporters ' central concern is to support students with the various requirements of the respective degree courses. This includes an emergency fund that offers students quick help in the event of financial difficulties.
Just €30 per person per quarter makes a big difference for HfMT students.

As a supporter, you get exclusive insights behind the scenes at the university.
Whether it's dress rehearsals of opera performances, symphony concerts or masterclasses by prominent artists - you're in!
You also benefit from a monthly calendar of events, the university newspaper "zwoelf" and a digital newsletter that keeps you up to date with the latest supporter offers.

Membership fees and donations to supporters are tax-deductible and serve exclusively and directly tax-privileged charitable purposes within the meaning of §§ 51 ff. of the German Tax Code (AO). AO. Donations and membership fees to the Supporters can be claimed from the tax office up to an amount of €300 without a donation receipt. For donations in excess of €300, we will issue you with a donation receipt.

University Foundation

The Foundation of the Friends of the HfMT (University Foundation) supports the Hamburg University of Music and Drama (HfMT) in its artistic, scientific and educational interests and provides funds for purposes that cannot be covered or can only be partially covered by the public budget. In this way, the foundation helps to maintain the high level of education, artistic excellence and international reputation of the university. Many goals could and can only be achieved with the help of the Foundation. Interesting and forward-looking projects are developed together with the university's Executive Board and sponsors. The sustainability of such measures is important to the sponsors.

The foundation was established in 1962 and goes back to a sponsoring association founded in 1947. Its structures enable it to work effectively and efficiently. The foundation's board works on a voluntary basis without remuneration. Donations received can therefore be used or forwarded almost in full for funding purposes.

We welcome your suggestions and idealistic support. However, we cannot fulfill our mission without financial support. We would be happy to talk to you about earmarked donations and your individual ideas.

In principle, the following donations are possible

  • Donations (also earmarked)
  • Donations in the form of sponsoring
  • Endowments to the capital of the foundation
  • Establishment of a trust foundation

You will of course receive a standard donation receipt from us. If we do not yet know your communication details, please let us know your address as well as your name.

Sponsoring purposes can be ideally combined with corporate purposes and the culture and presentation of your company. We would be happy to discuss this with you.

If you would like to make larger amounts available using the tax options, the - uncomplicated - establishment of a trust foundation within the framework of our university foundation is an option.

The University Foundation is registered with the Hamburg-Nord tax office under tax number 17/416/00028. The most recent notice of exemption is dated 08.07.2020. It states that the Friends of the Hamburg University of Music and Drama Foundation is exempt from corporation tax under Section 5 (1) No. 9 KStG and from trade tax under Section 3 No. 6 GewStG because it serves exclusively and directly tax-privileged charitable purposes within the meaning of Sections 51 et seq. AO. The foundation promotes "art and culture" as a charitable purpose (Section 52 para. 2 sentence 1 no. 5 AO).

A major project of the University Foundation in the 1990s was the redesign and restoration of the former "Room 18", which has since been transformed into the Mendelssohn Hall:

It is used in university operations for seminars and chamber music, but also for events organized by our foundation.
We only support projects at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama.

Examples of our funding work to date:

- Acquisition and restoration of musical instruments
- Financing of master classes, guest lectures and endowed professorships
- Financing of individual training measures
- Sponsorship of concerts as well as opera and drama productions
-Funding of masterclasses by renowned artists
- Organization of competitions and awarding of prize money
- Personal support and mentoring of students, earmarked scholarships
-Funding and support for the Master's degree course in Chamber Music
- Organization and financial support for the International Mendelssohn Summer School Festival since 2007
- Organization and financial support for the International Chamber Music Competition 2009
- Implementation and financial support together with Andreas Franke of the "Andreas Franke Academy" (support for highly gifted pupils)
- Together with Elke and Horst Dörner, purchase of instruments and financial support for the "An instrument for every child" project

To ensure the sustainability of our measures, we make sure that the success of our projects is secured in the long term. It is often a matter of "helping people to help themselves" and a corresponding "initial spark".

Many projects are closely linked to the supporter or sponsor, correspond to their own area of interest and may bear their name - e.g. individual and ensemble prizes, prizewinners' concerts, special training measures, etc.

The disbursement of grants is usually applied for by the university's executive committee and decided by the foundation's board. Innovative ideas are often developed within the circle of sponsors, which lead to concrete initiatives and proposals that are discussed with the university and implemented. This form of co-design creates a special degree of identification for the respective sponsor(s).

Many of the projects we support require long-term advance planning. It is therefore helpful if we can rely on a fixed circle of donors. If you feel connected to the University of Music and Drama and would like to meet and exchange ideas regularly with people who share your passion:

Become a member of our circle of supporters

Our circle of supporters comprises more than one hundred people who are committed to the aims of the foundation both ideally and financially. There are memberships from private individuals as well as from companies - represented by ladies and gentlemen from the respective management committee.

As a member of the Sponsors' Association, you make a sustainable and predictable contribution to financing the Foundation's activities by making an annual, tax-deductible donation. You can determine the amount of your donation yourself. We ask that private individuals make an annual donation of at least 300.00 euros (married couples 500.00 euros). As a representative of a company, we ask for an amount of at least 1,000.00 euros per year.

If you would like to become a member of the Friends, please send the letter available here by post to

We will collect your annual donation at the beginning of each year by direct debit to the Foundation's donation account. You can of course cancel your membership at any time by sending us an informal letter.

What are the advantages of being a member of our support group?

By making a long-term donation commitment, you help to create planning security for our projects
By participating in our regular events, you can take a "behind the scenes" look at the fascinating workings of the university
You can exchange ideas with like-minded people in the circle of sponsors
You will receive the monthly program and invitations to special events; the performances in the university forum are very popular
We are happy to help our sponsors with the planning and organization of events in a private or business setting - e.g. on the occasion of family celebrations or parties.e.g. on the occasion of family celebrations, anniversaries, company parties, customer events, etc.
On request, we offer sponsors who support events with donations of more than 5,000.00 euros the opportunity to be mentioned by name as a sponsor, e.g. in the program booklet

At least once a year, we hold a joint meeting with the Executive Board and Board of Trustees as well as the President of the University, at which we provide detailed information about our activities and exchange ideas with our sponsors. This is always followed by a concert or other type of performance by students of the university, who give a taste of their skills with great enthusiasm.

We also invite you to other concerts and performances in the university's Forum or Mendelssohn Hall. We are also regular and traditional guests in the offices of various sponsors who kindly sponsor such events. We would like to invite you to join us.

The disbursement of grants is usually applied for by the university's Executive Board and decided by the Foundation's Board of Directors. Innovative ideas are often developed within the circle of sponsors, which lead to concrete initiatives and proposals that are discussed with the university and implemented. This form of co-design creates a special degree of identification for the respective sponsor(s).

Germany Scholarships

Support our students with the Deutschlandstipendium

The Deutschlandstipendium is a joint initiative of the state and society: as a sponsor, you pay half of the monthly grant of 300 euros, while the state doubles your contribution. This means that the scholarship holder receives a monthly grant of 300 euros - regardless of income. This support not only makes life easier for students, but also creates space for creative development, intensive practice and concentrated work on their artistic development.

Your support - an investment in the future

Your donation is a direct investment in cultural diversity and excellence. You not only support the development of students, but also establish valuable contacts with the next generation of musicians, actors, directors, scientists, music therapists, educators and cultural managers. In addition, the Deutschlandstipendium offers you as a scholarship holder the opportunity to network within the university environment and actively shape the cultural dialog.

Why the Deutschlandstipendium?

  • Targeted talent promotion: You support students who stand out due to their special achievements and social commitment.
  • Partnership: You are not alone - your contribution is doubled by state funds.
  • Long-term impact: You create sustainable development prospects for culture and society.
  • Visible appreciation: As a sponsor, you can become visible in the university's network and take part in special events.

Become a sponsor and help shape the future of culture!
