The study program

Dramaturgy is one of the most diverse fields of work in the theater. Dramaturges, whether in drama or musical theater, are no longer just advocates of the text or the score. What is required is an openness to engaging with related arts - movement and dance theater, audiovisual media, visual arts and performance - for experimental, project-oriented work. Dramaturgy is not only production dramaturgy, i.e. the intensive artistic and academic collaboration in the conception and development of productions and projects. Increasingly, dramaturges are taking on responsibility in theater and production management and control the public and media presentation of theater practice. Last but not least, a dramaturge must have an eye and often also the ability to assert themselves with regard to the organizational, technical, legal and economic feasibility of ideas, productions and projects. Aesthetic, philosophical, political, sociological and intercultural issues. Thinking outside the box, the ability and desire to think independently and autonomously are key dramaturgical skills.

Cooperative module model

The Hamburg Master's degree course in Dramaturgy can be studied with a focus on acting and music dramaturgy. In the first half of the course, the focus is on theoretical and scientific lessons on the history and aesthetics of theater, music and dance theater, introductions to acting and movement, mediation in theater and the basics of stage and costume design. Numerous projects are realized at the university and at cooperating theaters in Hamburg in collaboration with the drama and musical theater directing courses.

Additional workshops and event participations include: Körber Studio Junge Regie, Theater der Welt, Autorenlounge, Brutkastenfestival. Workshops are also held on children's and youth theater, creative writing, play development and performance strategies. In the music theater focus, young music theater dramaturges can gain professional experience in the annual opera class productions with renowned directors and conductors with the participation of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra.

An internship semester is compulsory in the second year of study in order to gain experience in professional theater and opera companies.

The cooperation with the adjacent vocal, instrumental, composition and multimedia courses enables young dramaturges to try out experimental interdisciplinary production formats in collaboration with their fellow students from the Musical Theater directing course.

Master classes (e.g. Prof. Dr. Stegemann / Prof. Dr. Hans-Thies Lehmann / Bernd Freytag / Frie Leysen, Kathrin Röggla, Wolfram Lotz) further enrich the program.

Alumni of the Master Dramaturgy course work at the Thalia Theater Hamburg, Kampnagel Hamburg, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Theater Bremen, Theater Bonn, Theater Karlsruhe, Theater Konstanz, Theater Nürnberg, Oper Leipzig, Oper Basel and others.
