The study program
The field of dramaturgy is one of the most diverse in the theater. Dramaturgs, whether in drama or musical theater, are no longer just advocates of the text or the score. What is needed is an openness to engaging with related arts - movement and dance theater, audiovisual media, visual arts and performance - for experimental, project-oriented work. Dramaturgy is not only production dramaturgy, i.e. the intensive artistic and academic collaboration in the conception and development of productions and projects. Increasingly, dramaturges are taking on responsibility in theater and production management and control the public and media presentation of theater practice. Last but not least, a dramaturge must have an eye and often also the ability to assert themselves with regard to the organizational, technical, legal and economic feasibility of ideas, productions and projects. Aesthetic, philosophical, political, sociological and intercultural issues. Thinking outside the box, the ability and desire to think independently and autonomously are key dramaturgical skills.
Concept & Practice
The Hamburg Master's degree course in Dramaturgy can be studied with a focus on acting and music dramaturgy. The first half of the course focuses on theoretical and practical lessons on the history and aesthetics of speech, music, dance and performance theater, introductions to acting and movement, the basics of stage and costume design as well as mediation in the theater. Numerous projects are realized at the university and at cooperating theaters in Hamburg in collaboration with the drama and musical theater directing courses.
Workshops are also held on creative writing, play development for children's and youth theater, collective work and performance strategies. Additional event participations include: Körber Studio Junge Regie, Lessingtage, Wiener Festwochen, Theater der Welt, DRAMA! festival. In the area of music theater, young music theater dramaturges can also gain professional experience in the annual opera class productions with renowned directors and conductors with the participation of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra.
The cooperation with the adjacent directing, acting, singing, composition and multimedia courses enables young dramaturges to try out experimental interdisciplinary production formats.
In the second year of study, an internship semester is compulsory in order to gain in-depth experience in professional theater and opera companies.
Alumni of the Master Dramaturgy course work at the Thalia Theater Hamburg, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Kampnagel Hamburg, the Hamburg State Opera, theaters and operas in Bremen, Oldenburg, Bonn, Bielefeld, Gießen, Leipzig, Karlsruhe, Constance, Nuremberg, Basel and in the independent scene.
