Introduction

At the Institute of School Music you can expect a high-quality course of study with the best career prospects:

  • Benefit from individual and small group lessons with highly qualified lecturers!
  • Study practice-oriented from the very beginning in cooperation with a network of cooperating schools!
  • Take advantage of the wide range of additional offers in practical school music-making, such as lessons in piano, guitar, drums, saxophone and much more!
  • Study together with others in a personal and appreciative atmosphere!

The Hamburg University of Music and Drama offers the following teacher training programs with music as a subject at the Institute of School Music: Teaching degree for elementary school (LAGS), teaching degree for special education with a secondary level profile (LAS-Sek) and the teaching degree for secondary levels I and II at grammar schools and district schools (LA-Sek). All three fields of study can be completed as a Bachelor's or Master's degree course.

In both the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, musical skills are further developed in various subjects and teaching formats. In the Bachelor's degree course, the training includes high-quality, weekly individual artistic lessons (major subject, minor artistic subject, compulsory subjects piano and singing), small group lessons in choral and orchestral conducting, movement, arranging and music theory or musicology courses. In addition to the traditional classical training, the focus on jazz, rock and pop can also be chosen for artistic lessons. Special emphasis is placed on music education. The projects and teaching plans developed at the university can be tested and reflected upon at various Hamburg schools during the course.

In the two-year Master's program, the artistic, music education and academic skills acquired in the Bachelor's program are deepened. One focus is on the area of practical school music-making, in which particular importance is attached to teaching practical school piano playing.

All three teacher training courses offer a wide range of elective courses. Some "highlights" here are, for example, the courses in practical music-making at school (e.g. drums, guitar, saxophone, accordion), participation in university ensembles (e.g. chamber choir, jazz choir, school music orchestra, school music big band) or in-depth modules in individual subjects (e.g. music therapy, instrumental pedagogy).

Good reasons

...because music lessons in general education schools reach all children and young people.

...because singing and instrumental  music-making in the classroom, in choirs, orchestras and ensembles enrich school life and contribute to a productive learning atmosphere.

...because it is great to see children and young people discovering their love of music and their joy in making music together through music lessons and developing individually and as a group.

...because imparting knowledge about music cultures in the past and present broadens the horizons of children and young people in a fruitful way and invites them to engage productively with their own and other identities and cultures

...because offers a three- or four-year Bachelor's degree course and a two-year Master's degree course, giving you plenty of time to strengthen your existing skills and acquire new ones.

...because is practice-oriented right from the start.

...because cooperates with schools in many ways in seminars on school music-making practice.

...because offers individual lessons on at least two instruments (and/or singing).

...because "practical music-making in schools" includes lessons  on other orchestral and band instruments, but also in movement/dance and rhythmics.

...because basic knowledge about music cultures in the past and present is taught in a multi-semester music history overview lecture and musicology seminars, including excursions.

...because the school music students form an inspiring and creative community.

Promotion

As part of the doctoral degree program in extracurricular music education and school music in the subjects of elementary music education, instrumental/vocal pedagogy and school music , students can obtain further academic qualifications leading to a doctorate in philosophy.

JeKI

Behind this ambitious title lies a program that accompanies primary school children into the fascinating world of music. It introduces them to active music-making and encourages the children to learn an instrument of their choice. The first pilot schools started using the curriculum developed by the University of Music and Drama back in 2007. The project is now running at over 70 schools in Hamburg in cooperation with the Ministry of Schools and Vocational Training.
