JeKI

Behind this ambitious title lies a program that accompanies primary school children into the fascinating world of music. It introduces them to active music-making and encourages the children to learn an instrument of their choice. The first pilot schools started using the curriculum developed by the University of Music and Drama back in 2007. The project is now running at over 70 schools in Hamburg in cooperation with the Ministry of Schools and Vocational Training. An example from the everyday life of our guiding principle of social responsibility.
On the trail of sound
In summer 2007, the University of Music and Drama (HfMT) in Hamburg launched the project "Dem Klang auf der Spur/Jedem Kind ein Instrument" at selected elementary school in Hamburg.
The central aim of this music education concept is to introduce primary school children from Year 1 onwards to orchestral instruments and to enable them to learn to play an instrument. The focus of the lessons is on exploring the instruments without any prerequisites and making music together.
The special feature of the JeKI concept developed by the HfMT is the so-called tandem lessons, in which an instrumental teacher comes to the music lesson of the school class in cooperation with the school teacher and accompanies the children from grades 1 to 4. The children can also choose to take instrumental lessons from year 3 onwards.
The following Hamburg elementary school are currently being supported by the HfMT with teaching materials and free further training:
Schule Alsterredder
Schule Ahrensburger Weg
Schule Richardstraße
Schule Rothestraße
Schule Neugraben
Goldbekschule
Adolph-Schönfelder-Schule
Loki-Schmidt-Schule
Albert-Schweitzer-Grundschule
Katholische Grundschule St.Antonius
Dem Klang auf der Spur" is made possible by the generous and sustainable support of Elke and Horst Dörner.

The teaching material
The JeKI teaching material developed by the HfMT is suitable for meeting the children's joy of discovery and need for musical expression. Each instrument is integrated into the lesson several times and in different ways, so that the definition of a specific sound character (e.g. low tone = sad) is avoided. The children identify with the musical events and therefore perceive themselves as part of a community when making music.
The first volume of the teaching materials contains five modules that work with different impulses. Each module is made up of five building blocks in which the children are introduced to the various musical instruments, especially the orchestral instruments, in an imaginative way - be it with stories, pictures or songs. Listening and listening, exploring and trying out and finally finding an individual expression are the pillars that support this innovative approach.
Divided into four modules, each with several building blocks, the 2nd volume focuses on the four elements of water, fire, air and earth. Using short pieces of music, the children can now incorporate the skills they have already acquired on the various instruments (see volume 1) into short musical passages.
The pieces of music provided for this purpose in this 2nd volume are designed as teaching material at the interface between instrument exploration and instrumental lessons and enable the children to concentrate on one instrument in particular for several weeks. In this way, the children retain their interest in expressive instrumental playing and regular class music-making can follow as a natural continuation of this approach.
