Conducting

Conducting studies at the HFMT Hamburg: excellence in practical conducting work.

Students are offered practical training in a way that is unique in Europe. The training is based on 5 pillars:

1. concerts with professional orchestras:
In cooperation with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, students prepare symphonic works and instrumental concerts 5 times a year and present them in a regular concert series of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra.

2nd concerts with the symphony orchestra of the HfMT and the Ensemble 13/14:
The students assist in 5 work phases per year and conduct the 2nd concert. The art of re-conducting - which is always required in the profession - is practiced.

3. rehearsals of repertoire with instrumental students of the HfMT Symphony Orchestra:
Students work on symphonic and opera repertoire with their fellow students on a weekly basis. The students learn repertoire and the prospective conductors learn rehearsal techniques.

4. opera productions by the HFMT opera department:
During the rehearsal of the opera production, which takes place once a year, the students take on the repetition as in their profession, assist and conduct.

5. music theater projects of the directing classes:
Working independently from the initial idea, students work with the future directors to realize several directorial theater projects through to the performances.
