HfMT Bigband

Picture: Niklas Stadler

The HfMT Big Band is not only the largest ensemble in the jazz department of the HfMT Hamburg in terms of numbers, but also probably the longest established, which is not only due to its physical and personal proximity to the NDR Big Band.

The HfMT Big Band is the flagship of the jazz department and is made up of young, ambitious jazz talents. The jazz orchestra is conducted by course director Prof. Wolf Kerschek.

Under the direction of the ECHO-winning arranger, composer, musician and head of the jazz department, Prof. Wolf Kerschek, the ensemble develops multifaceted programs throughout the year, which are performed on international tours and at festivals. World music meets big city blues, swing and bebop shake hands and musical languages mingle - quite diverse for a big band.

The HfMT Bigband reflects the artistic potential of the course and regularly performs and gives guest performances with international guest stars.

In the past, the band has worked with artists such as

  • Kenny Wheeler
  • Maria João / Mario Laginha
  • Curtis Stigers
  • China Moses
  • Nils Landgren
  • Nils Wogram / Hayden Chisholm
  • Alon Yavnai
  • Trilok Gurtu
  • Tim Hagans
  • Jerry Bergonzi
  • Erik van Lier
  • Dieter Glawischnig
  • Ibrahim Keivo
  • Tom Gäbel
  • Wolfgang Schlüter
  • Scott Robinson
  • Lennart Axelsson
  • Joe Gallardo
  • and many more.

Large Ensemble

Under the direction of ECHO-winning arranger, composer and vibraphonist Prof. Wolf Kerschek, the Large Ensemble combines a regular big band with classical instruments to create a soundscape that is both symphonic and jazzy. The fact that the JazzHall Large Ensemble is already playing in its own hall, the JazzHall, in its first year of existence is another superlative.

The Ensemble 13/14 is a solo ensemble of around 13-15 players who work on the repertoire of this genre once a year and present it on two evenings. One of these concerts is conducted by students of the conducting class.

School Music Big Band

The big band of the School Music Department of the Hamburg University of Music and Drama, SchuMu-Big Band for short, was founded in 2015 and is currently under the direction of Michel Schroeder. With a repertoire of swing, Latin, soul, disco and hip-hop that changes every semester, the band regularly performs in clubs, at parties and, of course, in the school's own JazzHall. They particularly delight audiences with Michel Schroeder's own arrangements of well-known pop songs, which are sung and bombastically staged by students.
