Description

What is political art?

The series attempts to explore the current political space in transdisciplinary contributions and to map the possibility of political art in artistic positions.
The aim is to break the state of shock and depressive paralysis that descended on democratic civil societies, in particular on cultural workers and the intellectual community, by the end of 2024 at the latest, and to open up spaces for action.
This includes questioning the common diagnoses - the disintegration of the public sphere into individual "bubbles", the unbridgeable nature of the rifts, the lack of political drive on the part of the left, the youth, the "boomers" - in order to avoid reducing the complexity of political art in particular.
Because art, which is the target of autocrats in countries such as Hungary, Slovakia, Belarus, ... and in the party programs of the FPÖ and AFD, and whose freedom is or should be curtailed by monetary policy and censorship, is currently particularly challenged and must position itself between aesthetics, action and enlightenment.
In the propagated dissolution of obligations such as truth, facticity and empiricism and in the free competition of entangled narratives, art on stage has an important role to play. When the sociologist Steffen Mau describes that "a perceived polarization can become a real polarization", this also means, conversely, "Get involved, participate, take part in democracy, otherwise others will take over." (Mau)
Political art is therefore responsible for reflecting, deconstructing and shaping narratives. At the same time, this is also an opportunity.
These questions will be explored in ten lectures and an accompanying seminar - for acting, directing and dramaturgy together. The decision to address directing and acting students together stands for the commonality of the disciplines, ensemble thinking and the exchange of content across disciplinary boundaries, which are so necessary in the current situation.
We deliberately invite authoritative researchers from various fields of social research to alternate with theater practitioners. An incitement to think and to act. Guests will include Calle Fuhr, Andreas Petrik, Costa Compagnie, Ligna, Marlene Engelhorn and many others.
The lecture and seminar will run over two semesters, starting in winter semester 25/26.
The seminar "Art is a daughter of freedom" by Eva-Maria Voigtländer and Marlene Reiter runs alongside the lecture.
To kick things off, Philipp Hauß, Eva- Maria Voigtländer and Marlene Reiter will each give lectures on the entire project on October 22. Prof. Dr. Andreas Petrik, Professor of Political Science at Martin Luther University Halle- Wittenberg, will report on his research into social cohesion and the challenges posed by the rise of right-wing populist movements.
The lecture will then take place every two hours on a loose monthly basis.
A joint conclusion is planned for the summer semester
