On January 1, 2026, Prof. Dr. Barbara Hans took over as Head of the Institute for Culture and Media Management (KMM) at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama. She succeeds Prof. Dr. Martin Zierold, who has headed the institute since 2019.

Barbara Hans was appointed Professor of Cultural and Media Management at the HfMT on April 1, 2023. She was previously Editor-in-Chief of SPIEGEL ONLINE and SPIEGEL and was named Editor-in-Chief of the Year in 2017. As a communication and media scientist, she worked at the Universities of Hamburg and Sussex and held an Academic Fellowship at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York. Her first term as Director of the Institute runs until December 31, 2028.

Martin Zierold's time in office has included dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, the further development and reaccreditation of the M.A. degree programs and the expansion of third-party funded projects, conferences and publications. As a full-time professor, he will increasingly focus on research, teaching and the further development of the Cultural Leadership Scholarship Program. In the future, it is planned that both full-time professors will alternate in the management of the institute.
