Portrait
Prof. Niklas Schmidt

After almost 40 years, Prof. Niklas Schmidt will be leaving our university on September 30 and entering a new phase of his life with his retirement. A good reason to celebrate him properly and to present him with a colorful musical bouquet of flowers in addition to our many thanks.

Fellow students, colleagues and former students such as Tanja Becker-Bender, Tinatin Gambashidze, Anna Kreeta Gribajcevic, Moshe Epstein, Asya Fateyeva, Jacob Kuchenbuch, Liudmilla Minnibaeva, Daria Parkhomenko, Hubert Rutkowski, Stepan Simonian, Sebastian Schmidt and Anna Vinnitskaya will be performing.

Niklas Schmidt studied violoncello at the universities in Hamburg and Cologne and founded the Trio Fontenay together with violinist Michael Mücke and pianist Wolf Harden, which he was a member of from 1980 to 1997. During these years, he devoted himself entirely to chamber music and completed a highly successful career as a chamber musician with numerous excellent CD recordings and performances in renowned concert halls worldwide before turning to other formations and solo playing.

He has been teaching cello and chamber music at the University of Music and Drama since 1987, where he has had a particular influence on chamber music training and has accompanied many students who have decided to pursue chamber music as a vocation and purpose in life.

Niklas Schmidt has also enriched the musical profile, international networking and social impact of the HfMT with projects initiated and continuously developed by him, such as the Mendelssohn Summer School or the Andreas Franke Academy and the International Chamber Music Competition Hamburg. His commitment and passion have inspired and supported countless young talents.
