UNLEARNING
Telling stories means reproducing images. Myths, legends, and tales—but also non-fictional narratives such as reportage, biographies, and accounts of everyday life—construct specific images of their subjects over time. As recipients of traditional NARRATIVES, we carry these images within us and subconsciously measure new stories against them. Can we UNLEARN these constructions? And: If we question, deconstruct, and FORGET these traditional narratives, can we then tell stories differently?
Directed by Clara Brezinka, Viktoria Holenok, Pantelis Tiliakos, and Charlotte Wulff. The projects were developed in collaboration with students and artists from various disciplines and the Music Theater Dramaturgy program. Special thanks to the supervising faculty members Frank Düwel, Luise Kautz, and Albrecht Faasch!

STUS - Viktoria Holenok
A piece of Ukrainian remembrance culture in times of oppression. The violence of the USSR regime from the perspective of those left behind—the families, the children. The question of fatherhood from a distance. Vasyl Stus, a Ukrainian poet and dissident, was arrested in 1972 when his poems were classified as propaganda against the Soviet regime. From then on, his son Dmytro had only his father’s letters to rely on. Through these letters, Dmytro seeks to honor and remember his father and to discover whether he himself can be a good father, even though he never had one.

SCÈNES DE FOLIE - Charlotte Wulff
Mad scene, Wahnsinnsszene, scena di pazzia, scène de folie. So many of the great arias sung by female opera protagonists bear this epithet. For the history of opera is full of female characters whose predestined fate is to go “mad.” Under the guise of tragedy, women are silenced, as their tragic end is linked, of all things, to a loss of rationality—and thus of their right to have a say. But where might there be opportunities to counteract this misogynistic operatic tradition? Could this supposed madness not also be a form of protest, a refusal to endure the status quo?

BIG BREASTS, GROWING FACE, TAIL—Clara Brezinka
Sirens, hot hot hot! These enchanting mermaids are often portrayed as having seductive songs and a malicious thirst for murder. Is there any truth to this image, or is it a patriarchal and misogynistic fiction?
Imagine you’re on a ship in uncharted waters.
Imagine you encounter sirens going about their work on a rock.
Imagine that all the stories are false.
What do you hear?

SUPIDÖ — A Self-Discovery - Pantelis Tiliakos
In the dark recesses of his mind, where thoughts grope like blind hands, Oedipus wanders. The songs of his Dionysian self—impetuous, untamed, yearning for resolution—circle him like scavengers around a carcass. In the background, a faceless voice speaks—Apollonian, piercing, radiant. It demands order, knowledge, and truth where none exist. Oedipus stands at the threshold. Before him lie the open eyes of the past, the gaze of the Sphinx that never dies. Behind him lies the black hole of oblivion, the sweet poison of innocence. To look or to look away? To know or not to know? Truth as a wound or a lie as solace?
