Listen up, Eastern Europe!
Sunday, 01/31/2027 18:00 Ernst Barlach Haus

A Musical Journey in Search of Traces

This evening features composers from Eastern Europe who were forced into exile in the 1930s. Some of them died young; others were cut off from Western audiences by the Iron Curtain—and so their impressive music remained largely unknown to us. This is true of Jerzy Fitelberg, Jaroslav Ježek, Karol Rathaus, and even Bohuslav Martinu˚, whose compositions are, at least, gradually finding their way into the concert repertoire.
Conceived by Tanja Becker-Bender, professor of violin at the HfMT, this evening aims to trace the winding paths of music history and, in doing so, finally give a voice to the great talents among our neighbors to the east—a tribute to those who were uprooted by persecution, exile, and dictatorship.
