The study program
Bachelor's degree
Basic musical knowledge, a stable technique, extensive knowledge of styles and repertoire in different languages and an instinct for one's own voice are the basis on which a singer's personality can develop. You can learn all of this on the Bachelor of Voice course, not only in the central individual singing and repertoire study classes, but also together with your fellow students in many different group classes. In addition to the central singing lessons, the course is divided into seminars on historical performance practice, Song Interpretation and IPA (International Phonetics) in up to five different languages. The program is flanked by classes in speech training, movement, basic acting training, recitative and part study, scenic-musical basics, musicology, music mediation and vocal pedagogy. Participation in projects of various formats is possible at any time via the interdisciplinary networks within the HfMT, including the departments of Early Music, Composition, Chamber Music and Musicology. The cooperation with the Theaterakademie, which is unique in Germany, enables young singers not only to take part in professionally guided opera class productions, but also to gain their first stage experience in joint projects with young directing and dramaturgy students. There are also numerous collaborations outside the university, including with the Hamburg Ballet, the Hamburg State Opera, Theater Lüneburg and the Eutin Festival.
Master's degree
In the Master's degree course in Singing, the repertoire knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's degree course is further deepened. Over the course of two years, students learn to consciously deal with different stylistic periods. The emphasis is on historical performance practice, contemporary music and the compulsory and standard repertoire for the concert stage. Whether opera, oratorio or song repertoire is studied is not predetermined. The aim is to gain a broader understanding of the development of the genre boundaries of song, oratorio and opera based on the topics of historical performance practice and thus to sensitize students to the interpretation of different repertoire, including that of later eras. Over the course of four semesters, four languages are taught as part of the Historical Performance Practice course. This knowledge is supplemented and deepened by the subject International Phonetics (IPA). Students put together their own examination program according to their chosen focus.
The range of courses on offer includes singing lessons, repertoire studies, historical performance practice, Song Interpretation, opera auditions, stage design, movement, speech training and musicology-oriented courses on oratorio and song studies. Projects in a wide variety of formats can be completed both within the university via the numerous interdisciplinary networks and outside via the extensive cooperation network of the HfMT and the Theaterakademie.
