Description

Béla Bartók was not only a composer, but also a researcher. As such, he collected folk songs from Hungary, Romania and Serbia, phonographing and transcribing them and describing their morphology. This academic work had a significant influence on his compositional output. His lectures at Harvard and his transcriptions from the Milman-Parry collection will help us to understand his musical language from his own perspective. But even more important is the question of whether and how the work rises above this, i.e. whether the music detaches itself from the actual initial intention. Following these aspects, we witness musical developments that combine the unbridled nature of the "Wild Hunt" and the "Allegro barbaro" with the rigor of the fugue from the
"Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta" and lead to a drama all of their own, as in his opera "Bluebeard" or in his ballet music.
