Description

Music based on a single theme occurs across epochs and shows not only stylistic diversity, but also diversity with regard to the treatment of this one theme. Monothematic music therefore does not appear to be limited, but rather one that concentrates on a small amount of material, constantly transforms it plastically and thus gains new strength from within and is constantly evolving. In class, we will first deal with the terms "theme" and "monothematic" and then analyze selected works from the Baroque period to the 20th century. The aim is to decipher the compositional characteristics of these works by analyzing and comparing them, to systematically present the different expressive possibilities of monothematic music and to approach the limits of the monothematic.
