This analysis seminar will deal with various rhythmic ideas and concepts in modern music. As many different concepts and works as possible will be discussed, and both quite abstract and seemingly simple ideas will be pursued, always with the question of the resulting musical effect and practicability in mind. So far, topics such as compositional work with pulse grids, with absolute time, with serial procedures up to Ferneyhough, with minimalist concepts including phasing, with the montage of different tempo layers, with tempo modulation, with improvisation and with graphic notation have been considered for the seminar. Suggestions for further rhythmic ideas, composers working in these areas and interesting works are welcome!
