Description

The literary origins of the desire for horror can be found in the Gothic novels of the mid-18th century with works by Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe and Mary Shelley. In German-speaking countries, it was then the fantastic horror novels of E.T.A. Hoffmann that fed the romantic desire for the irrational and supernatural. On this basis, an extensive horror literature and horror film culture developed in the 20th century. While literature and, in particular, film cultivated the genre, there are hardly any references to this material on the musical theater stage. But isn't musical theater a multi-sensory space that can stage this horror? Isn't it precisely the auditory level in films such as Psycho or The Shining that gives us the feeling of fear and powerlessness?
The seminar will explore the literary roots of the horror genre and then discuss musical-theatrical adaptations. In addition to the humorous staging of horror on stage, such as in Roger Corman's "The Little Shop of Horrors" or Richard O'Brien's "Rocky Horror Show", we will talk about dramaturgies of horror and discuss the compositional approach to the horror genre in the present (O. Neuwirth, "Lost Highway" 2003 or "Monsters Paradise" 2026, G. Kampe, "Frankenstein" 2018; U. Kreppein, "Calligari" 2026).

Validation possible with 2 CP (participation and presentation) or 3 CP (participation, presentation and written paper). Registration via Moodle (self-enrollment) until April 3.
