Description

Between the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, there was a sharp increase in the number of monographs on harmony. Obviously, this sub-discipline was particularly in need of theory and/or teaching at the time. How did music theory react to the perceived crisis of the drifting apart of harmonic rules and compositional practice? In this seminar you can learn about possible reasons as well as the different types and currents of harmony theory in this particular period before the historical caesura of atonality. In particular, we will delve into selected primary sources. In doing so, we will trace the different meanings of basic terms such as 'harmony', 'doctrine' or 'chord' and discuss the explicit and implicit problems of selected harmony doctrines. In addition to discussing the positive knowledge presented in these writings, the seminar will therefore also focus on the methodological question of how a theory of harmony can be read as a source text.
In addition to a basic knowledge of harmony theory, the seminar requires a willingness to read German-language theoretical texts intensively. In-depth knowledge of harmony is not required. In addition to active participation in the seminar sessions, intensive preparation time is expected, during which an argumentative essay and a presentation on the same topic will be prepared.

The seminar will take place as a block seminar on four dates:
(i) Sat. 4/18, 8-11am (Zoom)
ii) Sat. 9.05., 9-18 h and Sun. 10.05. 9:30-12:30 h (present)
iii) Sat., 20.06., 3-5:30 pm (Zoom)
iv) Sat., July 4, 9:00-13:00 (present)
For successful participation, attendance on all four dates should be guaranteed. Please contact me if you have any problems in this regard.
