- Description
The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is one of the oldest (origin) myths of music. Music crosses the threshold between life and death, the singer Orpheus delights animals, humans and nymphs with his singing and is even able to soften the fearsome creatures of the underworld in order to bring his beloved back to life from the realm of the dead. From the very beginning, stories of gender and cross-species transgressions and - in the global appropriation of the myth - of race and classism are told and negotiated. Films such as Orfeo negro (Basil 1959) have taken up the myth, as have various literary works, which have then found their way back into music. The myth has been the subject of gender studies as well as posthumanism today. The seminar will take an intersectional and transcultural perspective on the various appropriations and manifestations of the myth and will also test and convey cultural studies theory approaches in the analysis.
