- Description
The history of music is always a history of migration - but is rarely told as such. Based on the migrations of people, music and instruments in the (lusophone) transatlantic triangle - between Spain, Portugal and Latin America - the seminar examines the intertwined histories of music. The focus is on the performative negotiation of power-occupied topographies along the routes of slavery, on post- and neo-colonial orders of knowledge in music, on body practices in dance - polka, maxixe and samba as well as tango - as re-enactments, on appropriations and reconquests. The space of the stories examined will cover the entire "long 19th century": from the end of the European Enlightenment to the beginning of the First World War.
