Description

Brahms' path to the symphony was arduous: as early as the 1850s, he began to explore the genre, but it took the composer almost 15 years to write his First Symphony - it seemed too overwhelming for Brahms to do justice to the aesthetic demands of Beethoven's works. The seminar offers the opportunity to explore Brahms' symphonic work analytically, to question it with regard to its references (not only) to Beethoven's models and to distil the individual traits of his contributions to the genre.

Registration under Moodle. It is advisable to purchase (or borrow) the scores of Brahms' symphonies, ideally from Henle-Verlag (= music text of the New Brahms Complete Edition), possibly after a look at the usual antiquarian platforms (Booklooker, zvab etc.).
