The first part of the two-semester course "History of Music Theory" is offered in a hybrid format. In addition to a sufficient knowledge of German and English, the prerequisite for participation is a willingness to read extensive primary and secondary literature, which will be made available on Moodle. The study of music theory literature will be supplemented by a discussion of basic texts on historical methods and the historiography of music theory. In addition, reference works, databases and applications will be used for specific subjects. The chronological focus in this semester is on the period from antiquity to the early modern period, also taking into account orality and manuscript culture.
