This experimental practice session is open to both students and interested colleagues. This offer is particularly useful for the areas of theory, early music and church music, but all other departments are also welcome.
Improvising polyphonic counterpoint? Sounds crazy, but it works. And it's a fantastic school of listening and penetrating linear musical thinking far beyond the boundaries of historical style. What do we do? We improvise in pairs, in threes, in fours: Canon in unison, in the octave, in fifths; free voices over a cantus firmus, canon over a cantus firmus; hymns in faux-bourdon, four-part chansons and much more. How does it work? With a lot of singing (but there's nothing to stop you trying it with instruments too), with relatively simple rules that you have to practise to make it work. That's why there will be examples, explanations and practice phases, which we will divide between four instructors.
