Description

We start with a theoretical examination of intersectionality as an essential concept for understanding social inequalities in their interaction in current feminist theory formation. With the insights gained from this, we will analyze the formation of the construct of 'us' and 'the others' in antiquity and the Enlightenment. We will discuss sociological and literary texts on identity and migration and examine the significance of intersectionality in the context of othering processes. This also involves gender identities and sexual orientation. We will examine migrant resistance to racist attributions from an intersectional perspective and how refugees currently represent themselves.
The seminar is designed as a reading course. However, we will also look at film spots, images and music. The seminar discussions will be introduced by presentations from the participants, which will be supported by the teacher. The seminar encourages critical reading and penetration of theoretical approaches. The students deal with identity formation in a globalized world and have the opportunity to bring in their own experiences of being made into the 'others' from their everyday lives and to reflect on them together.
I see the seminar as a place where a set of tools is developed that allows participants to analyze the formation of othering processes in relation to gender relations, class affiliation and the construction of racist attributions and what this means for identity intersectionally and to understand them as historically contested.

The seminar will be conducted by Ms. Simone Beate Borgstede, Ph.D.
