Torn between love and hate for the dazzling monster named Don Giovanni, Donna Elvira sings a recitative bursting with inner tension before her aria “Mi tradì” in Mozart’s “opera of all operas.” It reads: “che contrasto d’affetti in sen ti nasce!” A stark conflict of emotions rages within her. This psychologically ambiguous turmoil raging within a single human heart can, however, also be rediscovered in broader contexts, not least in the study of Music and Drama. Time and again, it is precisely from friction that the most relevant insights emerge. Given the complexity of our present age, it is therefore no coincidence that this issue of zwoelf, our No. 38, is dedicated to a pair of concepts that describe tensions and ambiguities with particular precision: ambivalence and ambiguity. Both phenomena play a central role in the arts. They reveal a particular strength of artistic forms of expression: the ability to facilitate experiences that cannot be reduced to a single perspective.
