What do we do with power?
Setting and shaping boundaries at university and at work
Dialogue lecture
Prof. Dr. Cornelia Bartsch, HfMT
Elisabeth Treydte, University of Siegen
Ever since music has been talked about, proximity and distance, power and abuse have played a central role in its narratives. The "power of music" to set people in motion, both internally and externally, is just as much a part of the topic as all those "music stories" that place the crossing of boundaries at the beginning of music or are part of its essence. The story of Syrinx and Pan, who carves his flute from the body of Syrinx, who is trying to elude him, is just one of many. The stories of musical genius - from the long 19th century to the present day - also tell of transgressions and conquests and legitimize questionable behaviour. How should we deal with an art that is permeated by such narratives in our artistic work as well as in academia? And what consequences do these topoi have for everyday life at a music academy? How can we both appreciate the "power of music" and protect ourselves from it?
In the subsequent discussion round, Prof. Beatrix Brunschko (Chair of Drama with a focus on basic teaching) and Prof. Christian Poewe (Chair of Scenic Teaching MA Opera) will discuss with the two lecturers how they deal with the power conferred on them in their teaching under the question "What do we do with power?". They will talk about their experiences in everyday practice with student actors and singers in artistic-scenic teaching. And they ask themselves and those present questions: How can the students be led into a free, playful interaction? How is it possible to respectfully expand the boundaries of experience? How are students in artistic training empowered to set boundaries with self-respect?

Diversity Study Weeks
Under the motto Diversity can Inspire, the HfMT is organizing the Diversity Study Weeks in the winter semester 2023/24. Together we celebrate diversity, because it is not just a buzzword, but the heart of our interaction and creative development at an artistic and academic university.
During the six Study Weeks, we will deal with the following topics: Inclusion, classism, proximity & distance, anti-discrimination and participation in education, coloniality and equality for women, inter-, trans- and non-binary people. To this end, we have organized panels, artistic events, lecture series, seminars and much more. These events enrich the range of courses on offer and are open not only to all students, but also to lecturers and staff at the university and, in some cases, external visitors. Come along!
Embedded in the Study Weeks is a lecture series on intersectional topics. Through an artistic-scientific approach, the lecture series aims to raise awareness of the diversity present at the HfMT in all its forms, as well as to identify gaps in diversity and investigate their causes.
