What moves the cultural and media scene?

Why do we need an analogue art form like opera when we live in the age of digitalization?
Keynote speech with moderated discussion
Tobias Kratzer
Director of the Hamburg State Opera from August 2025

In the age of the internet, all information and content seems to be just a click away. News, opinions and content are constantly available and outdo each other at breakneck speed. Digitalization and changes in media consumption pose uncomfortable questions for the cultural and media sector: do we need journalistic treatment of topics or is online content enough? Why should we attend analog forms of expression such as theater or opera when the 24/7 availability of online entertainment makes leaving our own four walls seem superfluous? The internet is causing the cultural and media sector to question and reassess its own relevance. In the 2023/24 season, the Hamburg Talks for Culture & Media will focus on the challenges, but also the opportunities that lie in digitalization. On five evenings, renowned representatives of the media and culture industry will have their say and report on their observations and assessments of an industry in transition.

The evenings will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Regina Back, Managing Director of the Claussen Simon Foundation, and Prof. Manuel Hartung, Chairman of the Executive Board of the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius. Both are lecturers at the Institute for Cultural and Media Management at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama.
