Hamburg's opera house of the future - a project of the century under discussion
Tuesday, 12/16/2025 20:00 HfMT, JazzHall

It is probably Hamburg's biggest cultural development project since the Elbphilharmonie concert hall - and is the subject of similarly intense debate: A new opera house is to be built on Baakenhöft in HafenCity by the mid-2030s. In mid-November, a jury selected the design by architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group. A new home for the traditional Hamburg State Opera, largely financed by the Kühne Foundation and donated to the city after completion.
What does this planned new building mean for Hamburg as a city of music? What artistic and cultural-political visions are associated with it? How can this new building change the role of opera within the city's society? What does it mean when a private foundation finances a public cultural center - what opportunities does this constellation open up, what challenges are there? How can such a project become a place for everyone?

The Institute for Culture and Media Management at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama (HfMT) and the Prof. Dr. Ernst Langner Foundation invite you to discuss these and other questions about Hamburg's new major cultural project with the following key players:

Dr. Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg
Dr. Jörg Dräger, Managing Director of the Kühne Foundation
Tobias Kratzer, Director of the Hamburg State Opera

The discussion will be moderated by journalist and presenter Charlotte Oelschlegel.
Following the discussion, we invite you to an informal discussion.
