About Evgeni Koroliov
Evgeni Koroliov, born in Moscow in 1949, is undoubtedly an outstanding figure on the international piano scene. The Süddeutsche Zeitung writes about his playing: "Koroliov treats every thing according to its essence, he is interested in an emphatic sense of being rather than appearance."
In Koroliov's repertoire, which ranges from the Baroque to the Impressionists to Messiaen and Ligeti, the works of Bach occupy a special position. The composer György Ligeti enthused: "If I could only take one work with me to a desert island, I would choose Koroliov's Bach, because I would listen to this record over and over again until my last breath, starving and dying of thirst".
Evgeni Koroliov has lived in Hamburg since 1978, where he was a professor at the University of Music and Drama until 2015. He himself was a student at the legendary Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. His teachers included Heinrich Neuhaus, Maria Judina, Lev Oborin and Lev Naumov. He was a prizewinner at the Bach competitions in Leipzig and Toronto and won the Grand Prix at the Clara Haskil Competition in 1977.
Koroliov has performed recitals in many of Europe's most important concert halls: Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Teatro Olimpico Rome, Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon, Palais des Beaux Arts Brussels, Konzerthaus Berlin, Liederhalle Stuttgart, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Laeiszhalle Hamburg and Munich's Herkulessaal. He has been a guest at renowned festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Carinthian Summer, Chopin Festival Warsaw, Settembre Musica in Turin, La Roque d'Anthéron, Rheingau Music Festival, Ludwigsburg Palace Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Bachwoche Ansbach and Schwetzingen Festival. In fall 2014, Koroliov performed Bach's "Art of Fugue" in the piano cycle of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Recent engagements have taken him to the Palau de la Música Barcelona, the
Konzerthaus Vienna, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Philharmonie Essen, among others. Every year, the pianist gives a recital at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. To mark the Beethoven anniversary in 2020, Evgeni Koroliov performed the cycle of all of the composer's piano sonatas at the Beethovenhaus Bonn.
His chamber music partners include Natalia Gutman, Mischa Maisky, the Keller Quartet and the Pražák Quartet. CD recordings by Evgeni Koroliov have been released by TACET, Hänssler Classic, Profil Edition and the Hessischer Rundfunk label hr.klassik. The "Goldberg Variations" were released on DVD by EuroArts, a recording of the 2008 Bachfest Leipzig. His CDs have received several awards - most recently the Soloist Prize at the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) 2015 for a Schubert CD.
