Mozart: The Magic Flute/B premiere
Tuesday, 05/26/2026 19:00 HfMT, Forum

This summer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s *The Magic Flute*—one of the most frequently performed works in opera history—returns to the HfMT! Once again, Tamino and Pamina embark on a journey between light and darkness, between the powers of the Queen of the Night and Sarastro’s realm. In this world turned upside down, the young protagonists must find their own way.

This opera owes its enduring fascination not least to its dense interweaving of fairy-tale and humorous elements, Masonic symbolism, ancient Egyptian mysticism, and ideas of the Enlightenment. This complexity is also reflected in the music, where folk melodies meet the refined formal language of Viennese Classicism. With its multifaceted structure, the opera has invited ever-new interpretations and readings since its premiere.

In this summer opera, director Christian Poewe takes the approach of breaking through the work’s traditional weight of interpretation by returning to the playful nature of theater. His concept views the stage as an abstract space of transformation, where identities and roles are donned and shed like costumes. A central element of his staging concept is the integration of the native languages of the internationally cast ensemble. This multilingualism gives the young performers direct access to their characters. In this way, the search for identity—one of the play’s central themes—is directly linked to the individual perspectives of the singers.

For the graduating class of the Master’s program in Opera, the Summer Opera serves as their final production—a final test of their abilities before they venture into the world of opera. Students from the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Voice, as well as international Erasmus participants, round out the ensemble. Under the musical direction of Willem Wentzel, a vibrant total work of art takes shape in collaboration with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and up-and-coming artists from universities that work closely with the HfMT (HAW and HFBK).
