A Recital Blending Music and Geography
Wednesday, 11/25/2026 19:00 HfMT, Fanny Hensel-Saal

What happens when music creates spaces and landscapes through sound—forests, castle ruins, moonlit nights, or endless distances? This question is the focus of a song recital that combines a concert and an academic discussion into a shared space for listening and reflection.

The focus is on Robert Schumann’s *Liederkreis*, Op. 39—twelve settings of poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, composed in 1840. Schumann himself called the cycle his “most romantic” work. His songs weave a dense tapestry of moonlit nights, forests, solitude, foreign lands, and twilight—not merely pretty images of nature, but landscapes of the soul in which the inner and outer worlds can scarcely be distinguished from one another.

Geographer Tobit Nauheim will moderate the evening and explore how spatiality emerges in the art song. In conversation with the artists, selected songs from the cycle will be examined together: How do text and music intertwine? How closely does Schumann stay true to Eichendorff’s poems—and where does he depart from them? And how do the singer and pianist translate these imaginary spaces into the lived reality of performance?

Konstantin Paganetti and Toni Ming Geiger have been invited to perform.

This event will be held in German.
