Description

Traces of Bach's engagement with the latest developments in the European musical life of his time can be heard in many of his works and reveal both an open attitude and an encyclopaedic approach. The lecture will focus on Bach's relationship to the stylistic trends of his time, examining the internationalization of musical life and the biographies of contemporary instrumentalists and singers. Particular attention will be paid to the development of national styles around 1700, the institutional framework of professional music-making and the intellectual debates on the musical effects of the early Enlightenment and cosmopolitanism.
