Description

This semester we want to deal with the topic of "portraits". Based on the approaches of biographical theater that we got to know in the winter semester, we want to explore what scenic portraits can look like. The portrait is primarily known from the visual arts, painting, sculpture and photography; it has not only had a depictive character throughout the ages, but is also involved in the construction of cultural, gender and individual identities. How can we transfer pictorial forms of the portrait to the stage? What correspondences of the visual arts can there be in the scenic and how does the form of representation also change the content of what is portrayed? What can performative portraits look like? And what is the relationship between similarity and stagedness, depiction and construction? We want to pursue a research-based approach together and approach these questions as openly as possible. This will include historical portraits, their functions and aesthetic characteristics, as well as current forms of portraiture such as the selfie.
