Description

Even before a temple is visible in the morning darkness, it is already audible. A deep chime of bells pierces the silence of the mountains, the wooden pulse of the moktak structures the monks' recitation. Even before the first light, sound organizes the space - and the beginning of the day.

Buddhist temples in Korea can be understood as built sound spaces: condensed cultural history made of wood, stone, color, movement and ritual. The seminar examines the structure and spatial hierarchies of Korean temples, their integration into the landscape and geomantic concepts as well as the pictorial program of the halls and central motifs of Buddhist iconography.

The focus is on the question of how architecture, sculpture, painting, ritual and music interact. What role does sound play in the understanding of space? How do recitation, instruments and ritual processes structure perception, sense of time and communal experience?

Monastic practice is therefore explicitly viewed from a musical perspective: Singing, recitation and sound instruments do not appear as accessories, but as an integral part of the sacred space. The temple can thus be experienced as a synaesthetic structure - as a place where nature, space, image and sound merge into a unity and whose aesthetic logic can also be made fruitful for musical thinking.

The seminar is aimed at students who want to understand music in a broader cultural context and are interested in exploring sound, space and ritual as interconnected artistic categories.
