Description

Modernity rarely arises within a single discipline. It arises where composers suddenly think like architects, painters organize time like musicians or technology itself begins to become an artistic partner. It is precisely at this crossroads that the really exciting part of music history begins.
The seminar examines individual aspects of 20th century modernism in the context of other arts. The focus is not on the analysis of individual compositions, but rather on the question of how music is networked with the visual arts, literature, theater, architecture and new media and how it was influenced by social, technical and cultural developments.
Aesthetics, sociology and philosophy serve as central points of reference to make the interactions between music and other forms of artistic expression visible. The aim is to understand modernism as a common field of experimentation for the arts and to gain as broad a picture as possible of artistic developments in the 20th and 21st centuries.
