Musical action, knowledge and teaching are never neutral. They are embedded in institutions, norms and practices that determine WHAT is considered music, HOW it is remembered, passed on, taught and evaluated - and WHO participates in it. Such institutionalization processes always interact with social conditions. The seminar asks how music itself and its perception have been and continue to be shaped by institutionalization processes: be it through standardized voice tones, scales or playing techniques, through canonical repertoire and its editions, through syllabuses and curricula and finally also through social norms. The analysis of such institutionalizations enables change and further development.
The seminar will take place as an online seminar in cooperation with the Folkwang University of the Arts (Elisabeth Treydte); occasional face-to-face sessions are planned.
