- Description
From a global perspective, music paths between continents and transcultural developments of music become visible, which carry their own dynamics. In this sense, the lecture "Music History Global" combines European music history with musical developments on other continents. Part III of the lecture deals with fundamental trends in 19th century European music history: from Romanticism to the precursors of Modernism, from Ludwig van Beethoven to Claude Debussy, from piano song and character piece, symphonic music and solo concerto to salon, conservatory and opera house - not forgetting the emergence of popular music. From this canon, we look further afield: to other forms of art music, e.g. in Asian countries or in the Ottoman Empire, as well as to the music of those continents that were shaped by colonization and missionary work, such as numerous countries in Latin America and Africa. In this way, the musical cultures that were destroyed and overlaid by European expansion also become visible. The course is designed as a lecture/exercise. International students are very welcome.
